Moving Your Fish Tank 101



Fish are sensitive animals, the slightest of changes to their environment can leave them stressed out and unable to properly function.  The first tip for moving with fish is a very basic tip: make sure that you have all of the necessary supplies for moving your fish well in advance of your move date.  The last thing you want is for your fish to stress or even die due to improper planning for the moving of your fish.

Some of the necessary supplies include the following: plastic bags or other containers for each individual resident of your fish tank, large cooler(s) for maintaining a steady temperature for your fish during the relocation process, protection for the glass components and other delicate pieces of your aquarium set-up, and large durable rubber bands for reinforcing lids on the containers which will temporarily house your fish.


  • Drain your tank completely for long distance but if the destination is short, preserve some of the water to help preserve the bacteria colony.
  • Put your fish in a holding container.
  • Disassemble your tank.
  • The plants inside the aquarium plants will survive a considerable amount of time if their roots are kept wet. If the move is short, put your filter medium in a sealed container without cleaning it. For long distances, either clean or discard your filter media.
  • Pumps, heaters, etc. can be packed like any fragile appliance.
  • Move your tank. It is advisable not to use professional movers unless you have no other choices. It is much better to move it yourself. If you take the services of a movers packers , then you can supervise them packing the tank and loading it in the truck.
  • Reassemble your tank at your new place. You should have enough dechlorinated/treated water available to fill your tank on arrival and moving water through your filter. Initially, put in a few hardy fish to form the nitrate cycle. After the tank is stable, put the fish from your old home back in.

After you are done with filtration unit, you should transfer the fish to the holding container. Drain your tank before you move. However, you should persevere some water in order to preserve the colony of bacteria. Then you must tank your tank apart.  It is always better to take the tank with you and you should avoid moving it with moving company.
